The Mosaic Map of Madaba from the second half of the 6th century is one of the oldest evidence of ancient cartography. It was found in the end of the 19th century under the floor of St Georges Church
The mosaic map is very accurate. Ancient Jerusalem is the focal point of the map. It was originally approx. 15.6 m x 6 m in size and consisted of 2.3 million mosaic stones. The map is very detailed and reaches Lebanon in the north to the Nile Delta in the south
