The popular Star Spangled Summer Concert Series, which brings a different tribute band each Saturday to the Daytona Bandshell, kicks off later than normal this year, on July 11, amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The series normally starts in May, but had been tentatively postponed to July. Daytona Beach city commissioners decided Wednesday, July 1, to resume the concerts on Saturday, July 11, with a performance from Hotter than July, a Stevie Wonder tribute band. The following Saturday, AC/DC tribute band Highway to Hell performs.
The Concert Series traditionally honors veterans at the Memorial Day weekend concert, but since that was canceled due to coronavirus, veterans will be honored at the July 11 concert with a patriotic flyover and singing of the National Anthem.
The concerts will be a bit different this year due to the coronavirus. Masks will be required. Hand sanitizer will be provided.
A kiosk outside the Bandshell will sell tickets, and guests will have temperatures checked and answer a series of coronavirus-related questions at all three entry points. Once inside, attendees will have assigned seating, with chairs for two spaced apart within wide aisles to allow for social distancing. Ticket holders will be given a wristband so security staff knows who's already been screened if people leave the Bandshell and come back.
Although the Bandshell plaza can accommodate up to 5,000 people, attendance is limited to 1,371, which is about 27% of capacity.
The Bandshell is located at 70 Boardwalk in Daytona Beach. Parking is available at the Ocean Center garage and surface lots.
Concerts begin at 7:15 p.m. each Saturday. The series runs through Oct. 31.
General admission is $2 per person.
