Southampton, MA is a small town, population 6,196 in 2018, located in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts. The town was established first as a district of Northampton in 1732 and was incorporated as a separate town in 1757. The Center Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in the town. It was established in 1738 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
Center Cemetery is an active 6.5 acre cemetery which is subdivided into 12 sections which are divided by gravel roads. There are over 3500 graves, 1,912 markers, and 820 family plots, at the last count. The markers are well cared for and the grassy area are well maintained. The Center Cemetery is the final resting place for 89 soldiers who for in the Revolutionary War. Many veteran graves of veterans from from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War are marked with a granite military style marker.
At the entrance to the cemetery is one of the earliest Civil War monuments in America, erected in 1866, just one year after the war ended. The tall brownstone marker has the names of the citizens of Southampton who fought and died during the Civil War.
