"The monument to Hartranft’s Division is on the southeast side of Petersburg, Virginia, in the median of Wakefield Street about 350 yards west of the intersection of South Crater Road and South Sycamore Street."

"This is the site of Confederate Fort Mahone, known by the soldiers as “Fort Damnation” for its horrible conditions. The “Lincoln in Petersburg” wayside marker is nearby."

"The monument is a tall obelisk of rough-hewn stone blocks. The south side of the monument has a bronze tablet of the Pennsylvania State Seal (usually found on the front of a monument). The north side has a bronze statue of a young soldier with his rifle and the colors. On each side of the monument is a bronze tablet with information on the six the regiments in the division.

The monument was dedicated on May 19, 1909 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in a ceremony attended by President Taft."
