The construction of the original cathedral started in 1610 and took 74 years. However due to poor building quality the old cathedral had to be demolished. The temple that we can see today was built from 1835. The works were directed by marshal Andrès de Santa Cruz, who was buried in the cathedral. The plans were designed by fray Manuel Sanahuja. The latest addition to the cathedral were the bell towers, concluded in 1988, just in time for the visit of the pope John Paul II.

The building has five naves, with a dome in the central one. It's dominant architectural design is Neoclassical. The stained glass panels were brought from Spain.
