"The Soul has Bandaged Moments" was created by Pamela Acosta as part of the expansion of the Electrify Amherst program commissioned by the Amherst Public Art Commission. The name is taken from title of poem #360 by "Belle of Amherst" Emily Dickinson. The Soul has Bandaged Moments appears in script on the top of the street and sidewalk sides of the utility box.
The art work is surreal. The street side depicts a woman, presumingly Emily Dickinson, sitting in a chair next to an open window. A strong breeze is blowing the curtains and covering her face while manuscripts (of poems?) are flying around the room. A downy woodpecker is just above her knee. The north side has a sequence of three birds flying upward. Each bird is wearing a progressively larger yellow mask. Below is a pond with lily pads and a toy sailboat. The back side has a series of four yellow masks in the sky. A red-hooded figure is rising next to a ladder that extends from to rear of a rowboat to towards the last mask. The south side has purple paper crane flying above the pond with lily pads. A paper boat floats among the lilies.
