The brief inscription is taken from the Holmes poem "The Ploughman":
"Till Greylock thunders to the setting sun.
The sword has rescued what the ploughshare won."
Many poets and authors have taken inspiration from Mount Greylock, including Holmes. Holmes had written several poems to Mount Greylock during his time living in the Canoe Meadows area of nearby Pittsfield, MA.
