På Skibbroen står en stormflodssøjle. Når man kigger på den og ser hvor højt havvandet på nogle tidspunkter har stået i Ribes gader, forstår man hvorfor ripenserne frygter Vesterhavet. Med jævne mellemrum er "Blanke Hans" skyllet ind over marsken og har ødelagt huse og veje og drevet folk og dyr op på højtliggende steder for at rede livet.
Den øverste ring på stormflodssøjlen viser at vandet stod godt 6 meter over normal vandstand i 1634 under "Den Anden Store Menneskedrukning". Dengang druknede mindst 8000 mennesker og mange tusinde husdyr.
On Skibbroen stands a column. When you look at it and see how high the sea water has been in the streets of Ribe, you understand why the citizens fear the North Sea.
The upper ring shows that the water was just over 6 meters above normal water level in 1634 during the "Great Drowning of Man". At that time, at least 8,000 people and many thousands of livestock drowned.
