Description: From Find A Grave: US Navy Four Star Admiral. Holmes graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1930 and was commissioned an Ensign. His first duty of duty was aboard the USS Milwaukee then the USS Augusta then the USS Houston. He next served as a Gunnery Office aboard the USS Peary and patrolled the Yangtze River in Asia. In 1936 he returned to Annapolis to attend Naval Postgraduate School. In July of 1938 he was a Turret officer, fire control and plotting room officer aboard the USS Maryland. By January of 1941 he was an aide and flag secretary to Commander Battleship Division Force and was present at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. He continued in that position until 1943 when he was assigned to the USS Stockham. He would become the Commanding officer of the Stockham in January of 1945. In July of 1947 he became the assistant chief of staff for communications, Staff of the Commander in Chief, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. He next attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island and attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia in June 1951. In late 1952 he became the Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Sanborn and in July of 1953 he was assigned to operations, planning and training officer on the staff of Commander Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet. He became the Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Northampton and served as her commander from October of 1955 through October of 1956. On July 1, 1957 Holmes was promoted to Rear Admiral and was then appointed as special assistant to the deputy chief of naval operations in 1957 and in 1959 Commander Cruiser Division Force. In March of 1960 he was the assistant chief of naval operations and director, General Planning Group, Navy Department. He was promoted to Vice Admiral on February 25, 1963 and became the Commander of the Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet in March of 1963 and was the Commander, First Fleet from January of 1964 until July of 1964 when he was appointed Director of Navy program planning and scientific officer to the Center for Naval Analyses in the office of the chief of naval operations. He was promoted to full Admiral on June 17, 1967 and as of the date assigned as the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. His last assignment was Commander in Chief, Atlantic Command, Nato Commander in Chief, Western Atlantic and Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic. Holmes was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in battle as the Commanding Officer of a United States Naval vessel during a major engagement with a large Japanese air force between the Philippines and Saipan on July 19, 1944. He was present at the battles of Midway and The Coral Sea. In addition to the Silver Star Admiral Holmes was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star and Bronze Star with "V". He retired in 1970 as Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, the 12th naval officer to hold the position. Holmes also rose to become the fifth highest ranking naval officer.
