This Mary's grotto is apparently based on the grotto in Lourdes

In 1990 this grotto was carved into the lava rock.
The inscription on the attached plaque reads:
"Built in thanks for your protection in the war years 1944-1945"
There is a Touristinformation-Board where you can read:
"During the bombardment around Christmas 1944, many Birresborn left the village to seek shelter in and around the caves. During the day people lived and cooked in front of the caves, the men went to the village to take care of the cattle and then returned in the evening. At night, many residents slept in the caves or in temporary shelters in front of it. In March 1945, when the Americans took over the village, the population was brought back to the village."
