The intersection of N. Houston Street and W. Grand Avenue forms the NW corner of the Comanche County Courthouse. Comanche County and the city of Comanche were both named after the indigenous Comanche tribe that dominated this area of Texas and into neighboring states of New Mexico and Oklahoma. The Comanche Indians were famous for their horsemanship. The horses they road were the wild mustangs that descended from horses brought by the Spaniards in the late 1600s. The riding skills the Comanche developed allowed them to travel widely from Mexico to Colorado and they were fearless in battle when on their horse.

Parallel to the training of horses and learning to ride them well, the pioneer ranchers needed skilled horses to use in managing the cattle herds that Texas famously raised in the 1800s. As the demand for horses that had intelligence in coordinating their movements with those of its rider and the commands given while moving, the cowboys began selecting horses for specific tasks in rounding up and cutting out animals in a herd. Over time, the American Quarter Horse Association developed a criteria for identifying horses that were bred and trained for use on the range herding cattle and cutting specific animals from the herd.

Therefore, it is not surprising that a figurative bronze sculpture of a young colt stands in an alert position at the edge of the Comanche County Courthouse! There is a lot of history from both the Comanche tribe and the cattle-herding ranchers who settled in this county and town. This young horse represents how special horses have been in the previous centuries. There seems to be a continuing future for the horse in Comanche County.

Across from the horse sculpture in the same corner area is a plaque placed by the American Quarter Horse Association telling of how the quarter horse is used in other areas of ranching, recreation, therapy treatments, racing and rodeos.
