Served as Superintendent of the US Military Academy from 1956 to 1959. Served as Commanding General, 82nd Airborne Division from 1962 to 1964. Led the XVIII Airborne Corps in Detroit during the 1967 riots. Served as commanding General of the Third Army from 1967 to 1969 and the Strike Command from 1969 to 1973. His medals include the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star and Legion of Merit
