United States Navy Admiral. He was Chief of Naval Operations from November 2,1949 until his death on July 22,1951. In WWII he was the Captain of the aircraft carrier Wasp. The Wasp saw action in Guadalcanal Campaign and was sunk in September 1942.

From Find A Grave: United States Navy Admiral. He was Chief of Naval Operations from November 2,1949 until his death on July 22,1951. He graduated the United States Naval Academy in 1917 with the class of 1918 and served in the European waters during World War I. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1922. From May until September 1942 he was the Captain of the aircraft carrier Wasp. The Wasp saw action in Guaddalcanal Campaign and was sunk in September 1942. He was Chief of Staff to the Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet from 1942 until 1943. From November 1943 until the end of World War II he was Deputy Chief of Staff to the Pacific Fleet commander, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. He was Deputy Chief of Naval Operations from 1945 until January 1948 when he took command of the Navy's operating forces in the Mediterranean Sea. He became Chief of Naval Operations in 1949 after Admiral Louis Denfeld was relieved as CNO by President Truman. Admiral Sherman died of a heart attack while on a tour of Italy.
