According to the American Guide Series book on Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, A Guide to the Keystone State, page 223:
"ST.PETER'S CATHEDRAL (Roman Catholic), NW. corner W. 10th and Sassafras Sts., is a Gothic edifice of limestone ornamented with white sandstone and topped with three stone towers. The lofty central tower,with its four-faced clock, is surmounted with an 11-foot copper cross. Every quarter-hour the clock chimes the melody 'Chimes of Erie,' written by Bishop John Mark Gannon. The church was dedicated in 1893."
Saint Peter Cathedral is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie. The church was designed by architect Patrick Keely in the French Victorian Gothic style. Construction was begun in 1873 and completed in 1893 when it was consecrated as the cathedral of the diocese. The exterior of is made mostly of red sandstone. The central tower is 265 feet tall, making it the tallest structure in Erie. The cathedral underwent renovations in the 1990s, reorienting the sanctuary, and is currently having restoration work done throughout the church.
