This area was settled in the 1850s by Elisha Chinn, and was part of the Chinn's Chapel settlement whose memory is preserved in the name of a road to the east of here, where one can also find the Chinn Chapel United Methodist Church, and the Chinn's Chapel Cemetery, where Elisha rests at peace with his wife, Mary. The community eventually broke into three pieces, of which Bartonville alone survives as an entity. It was established in 1878, named for T. Bent Barton, and saw its heyday by the early 1900s, settling down to become a rural, ranching community. It has occasionally been referenced as a ghost town -- only its old store survives -- but continued building has ultimately established Bartonville 2.0. Whether the ranchers remain is to be seen...
This trio was commissioned in 2010 to be part of the "Welcome to Bartonville" landscape that stands fairly close to the road that leads down to the old store and the center of town. The area is landscaped with native plants, and the horses are posed as if they are relaxing. Made of bronze, they are life-sized, and one, perhaps the mother, appears to be reaching down to nuzzle the foal, who is stretched out in the grass. The other horse stands behind the foal, with an eye towards the highway. If there is an artist's signature to be found on the horses, it is well-hidden, but the work of sculptor, Kelly Graham, is known to those who spend time in the area of Weatherford, TX.
