The plaque says, "The George H. Scripps Laboratory Designed by Irving Gill Built 1909-1910 The oldest oceanographic laboratory building in the United States. Used for many years as a working laboratory, public aquarium, classroom, and director's office. Many leaders in oceanography received their training here."
