From Find A Grave: US Navy Admiral. He rose in rank to become the Commander-in-Chief of the US Naval Forces Europe and the Allied Forces Southern Europe. After graduating from high school, he received an appointment to attend the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland and graduated in 1953 with a commission as an ensign. Admiral Moreau began his Navy career in the submarine force and served as commanding officer of USS Halfbeak SS-352 as a LCDR before transferring to the surface Navy. Prior to being promoted to the rank of admiral, his major assignments included Commander-in-Chief of US Naval Subic Bay in the Philippines (now closed) and assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington DC. In November 1985 he was promoted to the rank of admiral and assigned to Naples, Italy as Commander-in-Chief of the US Naval Forces Europe and the Allied Forces Southern Europe. While serving in that position he died from a heart attack at the age of 55. At the time of his death he had served for 33 continuous years in the US Navy. His military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (with one star), the Vietnam Service Medal (with four stars), the Korean Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal (Korea), and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His son, Steven Matthew Moreau, was a US Navy lieutenant who was killed in 1987 when his A-4 aircraft crashed in California while on a training mission.
