Born George Martin Weiss in New Haven, Connecticut, he began managing in baseball when he was hired to create and run the New York Yankees farm system in 1932. In 1947, he became General Manger of the New York Yankees serving until 1960. During his tenure, the Yankees won ten pennants and seven World Series. After leaving the Yankees, he was the first president and general manager of the New York Mets, serving 1961 to 1966. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.
