Op 8 juli 1850 schreef de Congregatie van de Zusters Franciscanessen van Bennebroek een eenvoudig briefje aan de gemeente dat zij wilden gaan bouwen. Verder werd geen bestek of tekening ingediend. Dat was kennelijk niet nodig. De Zusters die intussen de Francis­canessen van St. Lucia heten, kwamen naar Gorinchem om onderwijs te geven. De Zusters hebben tot begin jaren 80 les gegeven. Daarna heeft de Gemeente Gorinchem na aankoop en restauratie van het gebouw het in gebruik als onder­komen voor verschillende culturele instellingen.

Tijdens het opnemen van de foto's voerden wij iets ten noorden van het klooster een opgraving uit. Hierbij vonden wij veel resten van een ouder klooster uit de 15e eeuw. We hebben de eetzaal en de keuken gevonden van een klooster van Augustinessen.

On July 8, 1850, the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Bennebroek wrote a simple note to the municipality that they wanted to build. No cutlery or drawing was submitted. Apparently that was not necessary. The Sisters, now called the Franciscanesses of St. Lucia, came to Gorinchem to teach. The Sisters taught until the early 1980s. After the purchase and restoration of the building, the Municipality of Gorinchem then used it as accommodation for various cultural institutions.

While taking the photos, we carried out an excavation just north of the monastery. We found many remains of an older monastery from the 15th century. We found the dining room and kitchen of an Augustinian nunnery.
