About a mile north of the state boundary line between Missouri and Illinois on Interstate 57 is a rest area designated by the Illinois Department of Transportation as the Northbound I-57 Welcome Center. This rest area for travelers through Illinois is on a hill, with the commercial truck parking up the hill, level with the Welcome Center and its rest rooms, while the personal automobile parking is on the low side where you have to walk up stairs to get to the Welcome Center. There is a small plaza of landscaped sidewalks and manicure lawns where sign boards about Illinois are located as well as a WW2 memorial and this Blue Star Memorial Highway marker.
The Blue Star Memorial Highway marker has the same message on both sides of the large, ornate plaque mounted upon a tall metal pole. One side faces toward the commercial truck parking lot while the opposing side looks toward the Welcome Center building. The text on either side reads as follows:
"Blue Star
Memorial Highway
A tribute to the Armed Forces
that have defended the
United States of America
Sponsored by,
District VII, The Garden Clubs of Illinois, Inc.
In cooperation with
The Illinois Department of Transportation
2010"
These Blue Star Memorial Highway signs are placed along designated highways to honor those in the military service of the USA. The link below gives a brief explanation:
