Documentation on this project is limited to a name on the building - John M. Carmody. With Mr. Carmody being acknowledged on the cornerstone, his agency, the Federal Works Agency, supplied the manpower to construct the Post Office in 1941.
From 1933 to 1941, John Carmody was chief engineer for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the Civil Works Administration; served as one of the first members of the National Labor Relations Board; headed the Rural Electrification Administration; and, finally, directed the Federal Works Agency. The latter agency was created in 1939, after a major government reorganization, and gave Carmody supervision over the Work Projects Administration, Public Works Administration, Public Buildings Administration, Public Roads Administration, and United States Housing Authority.

This building is a highly modified Classic Revival building. The central portion of the building's facade is stone. There is just a hint of 4 columns flanking the entry supporting a very thin tympanum and pediment. The central paired doors are metal and glass with a large decorative glass transom above. There are two tall windows on each side of the entry. The following words appear above the doorway:
"United States Post Office
Anamosa, Iowa
52205"
There is a cornerstone in the western portion of the facade. It reads:
"James A Farley
Postmaster General
John M Carmody
Federal Works Administrator
W Englbert Reynolds
Commissioner of Public Buildings
Louis A Simon
Supervising Architect
Neal A Melick
Supervising Engineer
1940"
Building is topped with a white wooden cupola with a metal weathervane.
