Das Basecamp Bonn ist ein Hostel in Bonn-Dottendorf mit ungewöhnlichen Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten. So werden dort statt gewöhnlicher Zimmer ausrangierte Fahrzeuge wie Wohnwagen oder Schlafwagen-Abteile vermietet. Zudem haben sich auf dem Gelände allerlei Kuriositäten und nostalgische Objekte angesammelt, zu denen auch dieser stillgelegte, hellblaue Trabant gehört.

Der Trabant - auch Trabbi genannt - war ein von 1957 bis 1991 in der DDR produzierter, billiger Kleinwagen ohne jeglichen Luxus. Nichtsdestotrotz war insbesondere das Modell P601 ein Verkaufsschlager in der DDR und hat neben dem Wartburg das Straßenbild im Osten Deutschlands geprägt. Nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands entwickelte er sich zum Kultobjekt und Symbol des Charmes der DDR.

Dieses hellblaue Exemplar des Modells P601 steht direkt am Eingang des Basecamps, umgeben von zwei Originalsegmenten der Berliner Mauer. Er ist mit einigen Aufklebern versehen, der auffälligste trägt den Schriftzug "Männer aus Stahl fahren Autos aus Pappe". Das spielt auf die schlechte Qualität der Karosserie des Trabbis an, von der man meinen könnte, sie sei aus Pappe gefertigt. Das Fahrzeug ist jederzeit frei zugänglich und in der Regel auch offen. Im Handschuhfach befand sich lange Zeit ein Geocache.
The Basecamp Bonn is a hostel in Bonn-Dottendorf with unusual accommodation options. Instead of ordinary rooms, discarded vehicles such as caravans or sleeping car compartments are rented there. In addition, all kinds of curiosities and nostalgic objects have accumulated on the site, including this disused, light blue Trabant.

The Trabant - also called Trabbi - was a cheap small car produced in the GDR from 1957 to 1991 without any luxury. Nevertheless, the P601 model in particular was a bestseller in the GDR and, along with the Wartburg, has dominated the streets of Eastern Germany. After the reunification of Germany, it developed into a cult object and symbol of the charm of the GDR.

This light blue exemplar of the P601 model is located directly at the entrance to the base camp, surrounded by two original segments of the Berlin Wall. It is decorated with a number of stickers, the most striking of which bears the words "Men made of steel drive cardboard cars" (German: "Männer aus Stahl fahren Autos aus Pappe"). This alludes to the poor quality of the Trabbi's body, which one might think is made of cardboard. The vehicle is freely accessible at all times and usually also open. For a long time there was a geocache hidden in the glove compartment.
