"Amédée-Anatole-Prosper Courbet, né le 26 juin 1827 à Abbeville et mort d’épuisement à bord de son navire "Le Bayard" le 11 juin 1885 à Makung aux îles Pescadores, est un officier de marine qui a fortement marqué l'histoire de notre marine, fin du 19e siècle, notamment en mer de Chine. Il est décrit comme rigoureux dans la préparation et le commandement des combats marins mais d’une grande sensibilité et douceur dans la vie courante.
Le monument, commandé en 1885, fut achevé et inauguré en grande pompe le 17 août 1890, réalisé par Jean Alexandre Joseph Falguière (1831-1900) secondé par Marius Jean Antonin Marcié (1845-1916). Il a été financé grâce à une souscription nationale.
Il a été alors installé sur l'actuelle place Max Lejeune vers laquelle il pointe le doigt en souvenir et déplacé en 1954 sur la place qui porte son nom.
Ce monument a été endommagé lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, mais épargné lors de la Seconde, à part les canons qui ont été fondus par l'ennemi. Le monument pourrait retrouver des canons, une demande de dépôt de canons par le Musée de l’Armée a été sollicitée.
Le monument a été rénové en 2014 mais pas restauré. Les traces des dégâts sont toujours visibles."

"Amédée-Anatole-Prosper Courbet, born on June 26, 1827 in Abbeville and died of exhaustion on board his ship" Le Bayard "on June 11, 1885 in Makung in the Pescadores Islands, is a naval officer who strongly marked the history of our navy, end of the 19th century, notably in the China Sea. He is described as rigorous in the preparation and the command of sea battles but of great sensitivity and gentleness in everyday life.
The monument, commissioned in 1885, was completed and inaugurated with great fanfare on August 17, 1890, created by Jean Alexandre Joseph Falguière (1831-1900) seconded by Marius Jean Antonin Marcié (1845-1916). It was funded through a national subscription.
It was then installed on the current place Max Lejeune to which he points the finger in memory and moved in 1954 on the place which bears his name.
This monument was damaged during the First World War, but spared during the Second, apart from the cannons which were melted by the enemy. The monument could find cannons, a request for the deposit of cannons by the Army Museum has been requested.
The monument was renovated in 2014 but not restored. The traces of the damage are still visible. "
