En 1908, afin d'améliorer les conditions de vie des locataires de ses maisons ouvrières, la Caisse d'Épargne d'Abbeville fait construire des bains-douches à l'emplacement de l'ancien quartier de cavalerie Saint-Joseph.
Ouvert en 1910, l'établissement est équipé de 4 salles de bains avec baignoires et 17 Cabines de douches qui donnent accès à l’eau chaude tant enviée. Rachetés par la Ville en 1949, les Bains-douches fonctionneront jusqu'en 2005. Vendus par la mairie en 2005, et ont été loués à un salon de coiffure entre 2012 et 2014.
Le bâtiment s'inscrit dans le style Art-nouveau qui affirme un goût prononcé pour les lignes courbes et s'inspire des végétaux dont la stylisation offre des décors souvent très riches. Ce sont les architectes Greux et Marchand qui édifient les bâtiments qui se composent des bains-douches proprement dits et d’une maison de gardien attenante à gauche. Le plan en demi-cercle du bâtiment principal offre un vaste espace de circulation qui dessert les différentes cabines.
Le sculpteur amiénois Louis Leclabart (1876-1929), auteur quelques années plus tard du monument aux morts d'Abbeville, est chargé du décor des façades. Il orne le fronton ,qui surplombe l'entrée principale d'un décor mêlant végétaux et eau.
De part et d'autre, deux mascarons prennent les traits de Neptune, dieu des eaux vives et des sources, un peu plus bas, l'eau jaillit a nouveau et se répand tout le long de la frise. Ce décor rappelle ainsi la fonction du lieu.
Le décor intérieur est composé de mosaïques au sol et sur certaines parties des murs (écoinçons et frises). Des vitraux garnissent les baies et sont à motif géométrique ou végétal (iris et arômes). Certains sont signés par le maître verrier amiénois Laigle. Ils diffusent une douce lumière au sein de ce vaste espace et contribuent à la quiétude du lieu."
In 1908, in order to improve the living conditions of the tenants of its workers' houses, the Caisse d'Épargne d'Abbeville built baths-showers on the site of the former Saint-Joseph cavalry district.
Opened in 1910, the establishment is equipped with 4 bathrooms with baths and 17 shower cubicles which give access to the hot water so much envied. Acquired by the City in 1949, the Bains-douches will operate until 2005. Sold by the town hall in 2005, and were rented from a hair salon between 2012 and 2014.
The building is in the Art-Nouveau style which affirms a pronounced taste for curved lines and is inspired by plants whose stylization offers often very rich decors. It was the architects Greux and Marchand who built the buildings, which consist of the actual shower-baths and an adjoining caretaker's house on the left. The semicircular plan of the main building offers a large circulation space which serves the different cabins.
The Amiens sculptor Louis Leclabart (1876-1929), author a few years later of the monument to the dead in Abbeville, is responsible for decorating the facades. It adorns the pediment, which overlooks the main entrance with a decor mixing plants and water.
On both sides, two mascarons take on the features of Neptune, god of living waters and springs, a little lower, the water gushes again and spreads all along the frieze. This decoration thus recalls the function of the place.
The interior decoration is made up of mosaics on the floor and on certain parts of the walls (spandrels and friezes). Stained glass windows decorate the berries and have a geometric or plant motif (iris and aromas). Some are signed by the Amiens master glassmaker Laigle. They diffuse a soft light within this vast space and contribute to the tranquility of the place. "
