Église Saint Vaast

L’église d’avant-guerre était une hallekerk : église-halle à trois nefs de hauteur et largeur égales, séparées par des colonnes ; un style très en vogue en Flandre à partir du XVe siècle. À l’époque, le jardin public, espace de rencontre des Bailleulois, se situait à l’arrière de l’église.

Lors de la reconstruction, le chantier doit être suspendu de 1926 à 1930 du fait de difficultés financières : les devis sont diminués de moitié et les ambitions des architectes L.M et L.S. Cordonnier doivent être revues. Cependant, la qualité des matériaux s’impose dans l’élévation de cet édifice « néo-romano-byzantin » au style éclectique : on y retrouve l’art roman dans les tympans, la tour, le chevet, la chaire et le maître-autel ; l’Art-Déco dans le buffet d’orgue ; l’art égyptien dans les chapiteaux et les confessionnaux ainsi que celui de Ravenne dans l’utilisation des mosaïques. Lucien Detrez définit le programme iconographique exécuté par Camille Debert pour les sculptures et Charles Hollart pour les cartons des vitraux historiés. Ces vitraux retracent l’histoire de Bailleul dans le déambulatoire, et celle des saints de Flandre dans le transept. La chapelle absidiale est consacrée à saint Antoine ermite. Ce saint a fait l’objet d’une dévotion particulière à Bailleul comme saint protecteur et guérisseur.

Saint Vaast Church

The pre-war church was a hallekerk: hall church with three naves of equal height and width, separated by columns; a style very in vogue in Flanders from the 15th century. At the time, the public garden, a meeting place for the Bailleul people, was located at the rear of the church.

During the reconstruction, the site had to be suspended from 1926 to 1930 due to financial difficulties: the estimates were cut in half and the ambitions of the architects L.M and L.S. Cordonnier had to be reviewed. However, the quality of the materials is essential in the elevation of this “neo-Romano-Byzantine” building with an eclectic style: Romanesque art is found in the eardrums, the tower, the bedside, the pulpit and the master- altar; Art Deco in the organ case; Egyptian art in capitals and confessionals; and that of Ravenna in the use of mosaics. Lucien Detrez defines the iconographic program executed by Camille Debert for the sculptures and Charles Hollart for the boxes of historiated stained glass. These stained-glass windows retrace the history of Bailleul in the ambulatory, and that of the Saints of Flanders in the transept. The apse chapel is dedicated to Saint Anthony the hermit. This saint was the subject of a particular devotion to Bailleul as patron saint and healer.
