The Government House is the official residence of the Governor General of the Bahamas. The pink and white buildings stay true to the Bahamian feel while its stately architecture is an amalgamation of Bahamian-British, Georgian and Colonial architecture. When here, don’t miss the statue of Columbus placed in front of the building that was imported from London in 1830 in honour of Columbus' Landfall at San Salvador in 1490’s.
The building was damaged during the hurricane of 1929 but was repaired in 1932 and later luxuriously embellished around 1945 by the Duke of Windsor.
The Duchess played a crucial role in redesigning the house after the hurricane. She brought the fashion of New York wallpapers to the Bahamas and even painted one whole room in the house with the exact shade of her favourite face powder! The beautiful glass plaque placed on the door was brought from Windsor’s house in France and was an addition made by the Duchess herself. Fun fact- amidst the damage that the hurricane caused, the door remained intact and is still used in the structure.
Today, its architecture continues to be spellbinding and a walk around is not just recommended but is considered a ‘must-see’ for tourists.
