Le village de Sailly-sur-la-Lys se trouve à environ 7 kilomètres à l'ouest d'Armentières. Depuis Armentières suivre la route d'Estaires, traverser la petite ville d'Ergingham-Lys puis rejoindre la D945 jusqu'à Estaires. Suivez la D945 sur environ 5 kilomètres jusqu'à rejoindre le village de Sailly-sur-la-Lys. Continuez à travers le village sur la même route et le cimetière se trouve à 2 kilomètres de l'autre côté du village, directement sur le côté gauche de la route en face du cimetière d'Anzac.
Informations sur l'histoire
L'église de Sailly a été incendiée lors des combats ouverts d'octobre 1914, lorsque la cavalerie française et l'infanterie britannique et allemande ont combattu sur la Lys, mais de l'hiver 1914-1915 au printemps 1918, le village était relativement intact. Il a été capturé par les Allemands le 9 avril 1918 et est resté entre leurs mains jusqu'au début de septembre. Le cimetière a été inauguré par des unités canadiennes en mars 1915 et utilisé comme cimetière de première ligne jusqu'en juillet 1916; il contient 313 sépultures du Commonwealth de la Première Guerre mondiale et une tombe allemande. Le cimetière a été conçu par Sir Herbert Baker.
