A plaque on the base of the statue reads as follows:

This statue stood on top of the Royal Bank of
Canada building at the corner of Charlotte
and Dorchester street from 1901 to 1976.
The Bank was erected when the Sydney Steel
plant, the major event in the industrialization
of the area, was being built. The standing
position of the lion indicates that Britain
was then at war with the Boers in South
Africa.

Erected by the Royal Bank of Canada in
cooperation with the Old Sydney Historical
Society, 1980.
