Inscription on the plaque:

Sir John A. Macdonald

Sir John A. Macdonald was born January 11,
1815 in Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated at
age 5 to Kingston, Upper Canada with his
parents.

At the age of fifteen, John A. was articled to a
prominent lawyer and began a successful
legal career which was interrupted in 1844 by
election to represent Kingston in the Province
of Canada legislature. His talents were
rewarded by appointment to the cabinet in
1847 and as Premier in 1856.

Political dead lock in the Canada made wider
union of the British colonies desirable. This
led to Macdonald's participation in the 1864
Charlottetown conference and Confederation
in 1867.

He would visit Charlottetown twice more
during his long leadership of the young
country, in 1870 and 1890.

Confederation was his great legacy and for
this, he was knighted.

The "Old Chieftain" died in office on June 6,
1891
