The town of Forfar lies in the centre of the county of Angus in north-east Scotland. It is situated on the south side of Strathmore, a fertile valley that runs north-eastwards on the southern side of the Grampian Mountains. High ground on the southern side of the strath offers views northwards over towards the mountains and the 571 foot high Balmashanner Hill gives a full view of the town as well as Strathmore and the Grampians.
The hill, known locally as 'Bummie' towers above the town from the south and is prominent due to the line of Scots pines along its summit ridge, and also the 1921 war memorial tower that adorns the summit. The hill is a popular walk and numerous paths head up the hill from the town to reach the track that crosses the summit. The best view of the town is from the summit close to the tower.
