Tonopah has a history dating back more than 5,000 years. Through that expanse of time it has served much the same purpose. A place to stop and rest while migrating to some other place. Agriculture and mining have also played a role over the years but have declined in significance. Today the town consists of a post office, motel, truck stop, restaurant and land sales office. It is a census designated place with a population, as of 2010, of 60 people. U.S. Highway 80 became a major road between Los Angeles and Phoenix and beyond. It was superseded by Interstate 10 which reached Tonopah in 1973, wiping out part of the town. With the arrival of that much faster link to the world the town declined significantly.
