In Memory
of
The Honorable Oscar F. Nelson, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens
throughout Chambers County in mourning the loss of esteemed
County Judge Oscar F. Nelson, Jr., who died February 14, 1997,
at the age of 72; and
WHEREAS, The many important achievements of this
distinguished gentleman contributed to the development and progress
of Chambers County, and he will be remembered for his dedication to
its people; and
WHEREAS, A native of Anahuac, Oscar Nelson was born on
January 28, 1924, and attended Texas A&M University and Sam Houston
State University; he served his country with valor in World War II
and in Korea as a captain in the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, Elected to the office of county judge in 1962,
Judge Nelson served from 1962 to 1977 and was reelected in 1987;
he worked diligently to improve the quality of life for all the
residents of the county, and his leadership and knowledge of the
area helped bring about changes that were beneficial to all; and
WHEREAS, The owner of several area businesses, Judge Nelson
was a highly respected businessman who was a lifelong advocate of
economic development; he was responsible for bringing several
large businesses as well as many smaller employers to
Chambers County; and
WHEREAS, He became deeply involved in civic affairs and was
active in numerous organizations; for his contributions to his
community, Judge Nelson was named Citizen of the Year by the
Anahuac Area Chamber of Commerce in 1975 and 1995; and
WHEREAS, The passing of such a fine public servant is felt
not only by his family and friends, but also by the people who
benefitted from his generosity and community spirit, and it is
appropriate for the Texas Senate to honor the memory of this
beloved individual; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family
of Judge Oscar Nelson: his wife, LaVerne; his sons,
Randall S. Nelson and W. F. "Ted" Nelson; his brother, Gene Nelson;
his sister, Margie Nelson Thames; and his five grandchildren;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
Oscar F. Nelson, Jr.
