In the square in front of the old city hall of Schoonhoven is a round paved area, in front of which a plaque has been embedded. The plaque says in Dutch: Op deze plaats werd, naar overlevering, Marrigje Ariens, op 18 december 1591, na een proces wegens hekserij, gewurgd en verbrand (According to tradition, Marrigje Ariens was strangled and burned on December 18, 1591, after a witchcraft trial).
van bommelerwaardgids.nl: Marrigje Ariens (Poederoijen, 1521 - Schoonhoven, 18 december 1591) was een kruidenvrouwtje dat als één van de laatste personen in Nederland op de brandstapel eindigde wegens vermeende hekserij.
Over haar jeugd in Poederoijen is niets bekend gebleven, wel dat ze later veelvuldig geraadpleegd werd om haar kennis van geneeskrachtige kruiden. De reden waarom de zeventigjarige vrouw van toverij werd beschuldigd is niet geheel duidelijk. Volgens de ene versie werd zij aangeklaagd door een ontevreden patiënt, maar een andere versie vertelt dat ze een jongetje zou hebben willen betoveren.
Nadat ze opgepakt gaf ze toe dat de duivel haar tot tweemaal toe had bezocht en haar had aangezet tot hekserij. Ze deed deze bekentenis hoewel ze (volgens zeggen) niet gemarteld was. Marigje werd veroordeeld tot de brandstapel en voor het stadhuis van Schoonhoven werd ze genadiglyk gewurgd ende daarna tot asch verbrand.

Nothing is known about her childhood in Poederoijen, but she was later frequently consulted for her knowledge of medicinal herbs. The reason why the seventy-year-old woman was charged with witchcraft is not entirely clear. According to one version, she was sued by a disaffected patient, but another version says she would have wanted to cast a spell on a boy.
After being arrested, she admitted that the devil had visited her twice and incited her to witchcraft. She made this confession even though (allegedly) she had not been tortured. Marigje was sentenced to the stake and in front of the town hall of Schoonhoven she was mercifully strangled and then burned to ashes.
