The original lighthouse at Cape Forchu was constructed in 1839 and became operational in 1840. It was demolished in 1961 and replaced by the current structure which features an unusual "apple core" design. The original Fresnel Lens was replaced by solar powered a globe made up of a series of prismatic rings of glass containing 360 prisms. As the globe rotated, the light was refracted and reflected to emit a beam of light for a distance of 20 miles.
