The Belfry of Boulogne-sur-Mer, an ancient Romanesque dungeon is the oldest building in Boulogne. At a height of 37 meters, it offers the last vestiges of a first county castle. At a height of 37 meters, the belfry of Boulogne-sur-Mer presents itself as a square Romanesque tower surmounted by an octagonal stage housing the clock mechanics. The Clock is on a white background with black hands and Roman numerals.
Its construction would be attributed to Renaud de Dammartin, count of Boulogne from 1191 to 1214, one of the most powerful lords of the kingdom, who opposed the king of France Philippe Auguste several times. This dungeon is therefore the last vestige of this county castle, supplemented by other buildings certainly more comfortable and spacious and probably built of wood
Philippe Hurepel, who succeeded Renaud de Dammartin, completed his castle which rose on another site at the eastern corner of the urban wall. He therefore ceded his dungeon, which had become useless, to the bourgeois of the upper town who made it their belfry
The belfry's function was to welcome the bell that punctuated the time of social life, to offer a safe shelter for the seal, the Charter and other documents, precious goods of the commune. The tower, opposite that of the lord and the church symbolized a certain value: freedom of the commune and assertion of the aldermen's power. Despite its impressive architecture, the belfry concealed a weak power.
In 1268, the bourgeois refusing to pay the subsidy raised to pay for the crusade, Louis IX suppressed the communal charter, broke the seal as well as the communal bell and the belfry, which was partially destroyed. The following year was that of its reconstruction, thanks to the communal privileges then restored. It is probably from this period that dates the stage of the belfry, the one that houses the bells.
The octagonal floor, which we know today, was established at the beginning of the 18th century by the engineer Martinet to replace a slate spire destroyed in 1712 by a fire. Before that, the belfry with this frame and slate arrow, confined by four small arrows which rose above the angle watch towers dating from the Middle Ages, must have been similar to that of Douai.
The belfry was the only historic monument in the city spared during the terrible bombing of the Second World War. Since 2005, the belfry has been listed, like other belfries in the region, on the World Heritage List. "
