Description:

Track athlete Tullio Gonnelli was the national champion of Italy once in the 100 meter race (1935) and four times in the 200 meters race (1935, 1938, 1939, 1940). He represented Italy in the 4 x 100 meters relay race in the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin. In this famous race the United States relay team of Jesse Owens, Ralph Metcalfe, Foy Draper, and Frank Wykoff won the gold medal with a time of 39.8 seconds. The Italian team of Orazio Mariani - Gianni Caldana - Elio Ragni - Tullio Gonnelli won he silver medal with a time of 41 seconds.

The team of Orazio Mariani - Gianni Caldana - Elio Ragni - Tullio Gonnelli was scheduled to competing in the 1940 Summer Olympics in Tokyo but the event was cancelled because of the start of World War II. He then served for three years in the army.
