There's nothing obvious to suggest why the cemetery has the name that it has. It is located in the Delaware Creek valley, and there are some Wells family members buried here, but there's no obvious old timer who may have been an area settler whose property was nearby. It's also possible that "Wells" refers to the wells just north of here in Bromide, which you can no longer visit to take in their mineral content. Bromide itself still has a small population and even a post office, but without its mineral bath industry, it is a shadow of its former self. Also in the area was the Wapanucka Academy, a school for girls, but what remains of the site is on restricted private land.
