My Commentary:
The churches in Galena were set on the side of the bluff so that they could be seen on the other side of the river - they make a pretty picture. This is another fine example of Romanesque Revival - lots of arches and the square tower - this time used for the entry. This was the home church of U.S. Grant when he was a resident of Galena.
At the corner of Washington and Bench is the METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, built in 1853. Bishop John Vincent, its first pastor, was the founder of the Lake Chautauqua (N. Y.), Assembly which suggested the commercialized traveling chautauqua of later years. The pew where the Grant family prayed has been preserved here. Bench could easily have been named Church Street, as most of the city's eight churches are either on or near it.

Architectural Description: This is a 2-story church in the Gothic Revival style built in 1856. The foundation is not visible. Exterior walls are brick. The building has a front-gable roof clad in asphalt shingles. Windows are original wood 1/1 double- or single-hung, stained glass, round arch, stone sills and lintels. Doors are historic wood paneled.
