The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum was the end result of the Presidential Commission on the Holocaust established in 1978 to create an appropriate national memorial. The cornerstone of the building was laid in October of 1988 and the memorial/museum was officially dedicated on April 22, 1993. The building was designed by architect James Ingo Freed whose Jewish family had fled from Germany in 1939 and immigrated to the United States.
The hexagonal-shaped portion of the building contains the official memorial to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and is known as the Hall of Remembrance. The rest of the building is devoted to a museum containing hundreds of artifacts and several theaters leading visitors through a chronological history of the Holocaust.
The postal card was sold as a premium item, that is, it cost more than the face value of the stamp. The obverse is not blank but rather shows a view of the museum building from above and with a glossy finish.
