In 2014, the UN issued a sheet of international rate postage stamps in conjunction with the ASDA (American Stamp Dealer’s Association) show held in New York City. The sheet contained ten different stamps with ten different labels. The stamps show different views in and around the UN Headquarters while the labels feature various aspects of the stamp collecting hobby. This particular stamp shows the view looking down into the lobby of the General Assembly building from the balcony just outside the General Assembly Hall.

The photograph reproduced on the stamp must be from the early days of the UN as it shows the replica of the Artemision Bronze (a gift from Greece in 1953) but does not include the Sputnik I replica (a gift from the Soviet Union in 1959) nor the mural entitled “Brotherhood” by Rufino Tamayo (a gift from Mexico in 1971).

The Artemision Bronze is so named because it was fished out of the sea near the Greek cape of Artemisium in northern Euboea. It was deposited there as the result of an apparent shipwreck. Bronze resists corrosion in seawater, thus the statue was remarkably well preserved. The statue at UN Headquarters is a copy of the original which is in a museum in Athens.

When this statue was first presented to the United Nations, it was said to represent Poseidon but a little later that was change to Zeus. Officially, no one knows for sure. Apparently, whether the statue represents Poseidon or Zeus would depend on what he was holding in his right hand: a trident would mean Poseidon and a lightning bolt would mean Zeus. But alas, that artifact was never found so the mystery remains.
