The Sarnia train station was built in 1891 by the Grand Trunk Railway. It has since been acquired by VIA Rail through Canadian National Railway.
It is presently the western terminus of daily VIA Rail service to Toronto via London and Kitchener. In the past, the station has been served by Amtrak trains.
The station is adjacent to a large sorting yard operated by Canadian National Railway.
Located along the CN Strathroy subdivision, the station sits between the US-Canada border (via the St. Clair Tunnel) to the west and the Strathroy station to the east.
Adjacent to the platform are two sections of tunnel shielding as examples of what was used in the construction of the original and second St. Clair Tunnels crossing under the St. Clair river between Sarnia, Ontario, and Port Huron, Michigan.
