The New Orleans Public Library operates in 13 locations. The Main Library opened in 1958. The building which includes three main floors and two basements, is the flagship location of the New Orleans Public Library, providing the largest collection of popular and research sources in the system. It also includes a Louisiana Division that houses city archives and special collections. The Main Library offers a wide collection of books, music, and movies, and hosts many programs for children, teens, and adults.
During Hurricane Katrina, some broken windows and floors were damaged by roof leaks, but the basement remained dry. The library partially reopened on 31 October 2005 and was fully operational in August 2007. Part of the Main Library facilities were used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other federal agencies and contractors working on disaster recovery.
