[DE] Landgräfin Caroline wurde 1721 als Prinzessin von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld geboren. Sie heiratete 1741 den Landgrafen von Hessen-Darmstadt. Sie lebte zeitweise in der Residenz in Darmstadt und war mit dem Preußenkönig Friedrich II., mit Goethe, Herder und Wieland befreundet. Auf ihren Wunsch hin wurde sie nach ihrem Tod 1774 im Herrengarten in Darmstadt beigesetzt.

Das Grabmal befindet sich unter Bäumen und wird durch eine Urne geschmückt, die Friedrich II. gestiftet hatte. Darauf findet sich neben den biographischen Daten die Aufschrift "femina sexo, ingenio vir" (von Geschlecht eine Frau, vom Geist ein Mann), mit der der Preußenkönig ihr seine Hochachtung aussprach. In der Nähe des Grabes ist eine erklärende Tafel aufgestellt.

[ENG] Landgravine Caroline was born in 1721 as Princess of Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld. In 1741 she married the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt. She lived temporarily in the residence in Darmstadt and was friends with the Prussian king Friedrich II, with Goethe, Herder and Wieland. At her request, she was buried in the Herrengarten in Darmstadt after her death in 1774.

The tomb is located under trees and is adorned by an urn that Frederick II had donated. Next to the biographical data there is the inscription "femina sexo, ingenio vir" (a woman by sex, a man by spirit) with which the Prussian king expressed his respect. There is an explanatory plaque near the grave.
