In 2001, the Danish theologian Jørgen Laursen Vig, who owned Hesbjerg Castle in Funen, invited the Russian nun Amvrosija to Denmark with the purpose of building a Russian Orthodox monastery at his castle. The monastery was dedicated to the last Russian Tzar Nikolaj, son of the Danish princess Dagmar. The monastery is part of the Russian Patriarchate in Moscow.
In 2005 Jørgen Laursen Vig died and in 2012 Nun Amvrosija moved to the small island of Baagø off Assens, where she has since continued the monastery and built a beautiful little church. At various festivals, services are held when a Russian Orthodox priest comes from Copenhagen. On the website www.Hesbjerg.ru you can see when worship is held.

Next to the church is a small resort with rooms for pilgrims and guests from all over Denmark and Europe.
