The dragon is the main mythological symbol of Trutnov and has been a part of the town coat of arms since the 15th century. The legend of the dragon was written at the end of the 16th century in a unique manuscript collection by the then chronicler Simon Hüttel (1530-1601). Among other things, it discusses how Albrecht of Trautenberg and his retinue overcame a terrible monster during the founding of Trutnov, thus symbolically gaining the right to settle the area. In the later versions of the legend is hero charcoal burner Trut.
Association "Trutnov - A Town of Dragon" (Sdružení "Trutnov-Mesto draka") had the sculpture manufactured according a design of Tereza Komárková in 2004. Its iron body is covered with copper sheet and even with a wooden landing, the sculpture weighs almost 400 kg, measuring about six meters in length. The sculptor is an artisan blacksmith Martin Malich. The dragon firstly appeared at the Old Town Hall in Trutnov in 2005. The dragon is hung on the Town Hall clocktower every year between the feasts of two dragonslayers - Saint George (April 23) and Saint Michael (September 29).
