The large stone Krakonoš fountain with central bronze statue of Krakonoš (Rübezahl) decorates central public space of town Trutnov - Krakonošovo námestí (Krakonoš/Rübezahl Square). The fountain is a classicizing romantic element of the square from 1892, designed by prof. J. Kirschner. It is also an evidence of architectural interventions in the form of public space at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The fountain has a rectangular ground plan of 8 × 6 m and is located in the middle of the square, oriented to the NW side. The shape of 105 cm high basin is conical (widening upwards), with segmental corners. In the middle of the basin is a rectangular plinth (2.2 × 3 × 0.9 m), from which grows 3 m high rough-heeled base that imitates a rock block. On the rock stands a 2.25 m tall bronze statue of Krakonoš.
Guardian Rübezahl (Polish: Liczyrzepa, Duch Gór, Karkonosz, Rzepiór, or Rzepolicz; Czech: Krkonoš or Krakonoš) is a folklore mountain spirit (woodwose) of the Krkonoše Mountains (Giant Mountains, Riesengebirge, Karkonosze), a mountain range along the border between the historical lands of Bohemia and Silesia. He is the subject of many legends and fairy tales in German, Polish, and Czech folklore. [wiki]
