Les premières traces de fortifications en pierre, partiellement appareillées en arête-de-poisson datent du Xe siècle, ce qui ferait du château de Falaise l'un des premiers châteaux normands en pierre. La datation du front Est par le carbone 14 a en effet permis d'établir la construction d'une première enceinte maçonnée entre 960 et 1020, peut-être sous Richard Ier de Normandie, mais plus vraisemblablement sous son fils, Richard II. En 1027, Robert entra en rébellion contre son frère Richard III et s'enferma dans la forteresse. Le duc vint l'assiéger. Guillaume de Jumièges écrit qu'il fit "sans cesse jouer les béliers et les balistes", preuve de la fortification du lieu. Peu de temps après le début des combats, Robert décida de se rendre et les deux frères se réconcilièrent. Le château a connu trois grandes phases de constructions différentes, il en résulte trois donjons : Au XIIe siècle, le premier est un donjon-palais de plan quadrangulaire typique de l'architecture anglo-normande (cf. Tour de Londres). Il fut érigé en 1123 par Henri Ier Beauclerc5, quatrième fils de Guillaume le Conquérant au XIIe siècle, c'est le grand donjon. Le premier étage — l'espace ducal — est composé des pièces traditionnelles de l'habitat seigneurial médiéval : la Grande-Salle, pièce de réception (en latin aula), la chambre, pièce de vie privée (camera), la chapelle (capella)6; dans les salles, on trouve des traces d'une cuisine et de lieux où étaient stockés les vivres en cas de siège. Ce donjon repose partiellement sur des murs maçonnés formellement identifiés comme appartenant à l'ancien donjon de l'époque de Guillaume le Conquérant7. Le second donjon fut probablement voulu et financé par Henri II Plantagenêt8. On sait que le nouveau duc-roi a passé Noël 1159 au château de Falaise en compagnie de sa femme, Aliénor d'Aquitaine, et de sa cour9. Le nouvel élément est également quadrangulaire, ses dimensions sont plus modestes, il agrandit l'espace habitable : c'est le petit donjon. Sa position à l'opposé de l'entrée du grand donjon en fait un ouvrage plus d'agrément que de défense. Enfin, le troisième donjon fut bâti au début du XIIIe siècle par Philippe Auguste, roi de France à la suite de la conquête du duché de Normandie par son armée11. C'est une tour de plan circulaire, à vocation uniquement défensive, qui est construite selon les prescriptions des ingénieurs militaires du roi de France, c'est la tour Talbot. Le château, abandonné au XVIIe siècle, est finalement classé au titre des monuments historiques en 184012. Victor Ruprich-Robert (disciple de Viollet-le-Duc) entame une campagne de restauration qui sauve les donjons de la ruine. Les donjons furent peu touchés par les bombardements alliés lors des combats de la Poche de Falaise. Entre 1987 et 1997, les donjons ont fait l'objet d'une restauration de la part de Bruno Decaris, architecte en chef des monuments historiques du Calvados. Il a réalisé une version moderne de l'avant-corps du grand donjon dont les fondations étaient connues. Cette reconstruction fut controversée13 car elle utilise de l'acier et du béton armé verni. En accord avec la charte de Venise, l'utilisation de tels matériaux pour restaurer un château médiéval vise à informer le visiteur de l'actualité de la réalisation.

Architecture

On retrouve de premières traces de fortifications qui datent du Xe siècle sur le front est de l'enceinte castrale. Les différentes phases de construction sont clairement identifiables. Chacun des trois donjons correspond à une période de construction. Le premier donjon, qui est le plus grand, correspond à la plus grande phase de construction. Faisant office de palais, il est construit suivant un plan quadrangulaire. Le premier étage est l'espace ducal qui sert d'habitat au seigneur des lieux. On y trouve la Grande-Salle qui sert pour les réceptions, la chambre du seigneur et la chapelle. On trouve également les traces d'une cuisine et de magasins à vivres. Ce donjon repose sur des fondations plus anciennes datant de l'époque de Guillaume Le Conquérant. Le second donjon adopte également une forme quadrangulaire. Il se situe à l'opposé de l'entrée du château qui se situe dans le premier et plus grand donjon. De dimensions plus réduites, il n'a pas de réelle vocation militaire et reste avant tout un lieu d'habitation et d'agrément. Le troisième donjon a une seule vocation, la défense du château. De plan circulaire, il est nommé « tour Talbot ». Le château fait l’objet d’un classement au titre des monuments historiques par la liste de 1840.

The first traces of stone fortifications, partly built as fish-bridges, date from the 10th century, which would make the Château de Falaise one of the first Norman stone castles. The dating of the Eastern front by carbon 14 has indeed allowed to establish the construction of a first masonry enclosure between 960 and 1020, perhaps under Richard I of Normandy, but more likely under his son, Richard II. In 1027, Robert entered in rebellion against his brother Richard III and locked himself in the fortress. The Duke came to lay siege to it. William of Jumièges wrote that he "constantly played the rams and the ballists", proof of the fortification of the place. Shortly after the fighting began, Robert decided to surrender and the two brothers were reconciled. The castle has undergone three major phases of construction, resulting in three dungeons: In the 12th century, the first is a keep-palace with a quadrangular plan typical of Anglo-Norman architecture (cf. Tower of London). It was erected in 1123 by Henri I Beauclerc, fourth son of William the Conqueror in the 12th century, it is the great keep. The first floor - the ducal space - is made up of the traditional rooms of the medieval seigniorial residence: the Great Hall, reception room (in Latin aula), the bedroom, private room (camera), the chapel (capella); in the rooms there are traces of a kitchen and places where food was stored in case of siege. The keep rests partially on masonry walls formally identified as belonging to the old keep from the time of William the Conqueror. The second keep was probably wanted and financed by Henri II Plantagenet. It is known that the new duke-king spent Christmas 1159 at the Château de Falaise in the company of his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and his court. The new element is also quadrangular, its dimensions are more modest, it enlarges the living space: it is the small keep. Its position opposite the entrance to the large keep makes it more for pleasure than for defence. Finally, the third keep was built at the beginning of the 13th century by Philippe Auguste, king of France following the conquest of the duchy of Normandy by his army. It is a tower of circular plan, with only defensive vocation, which is built according to the prescriptions of the military engineers of the king of France, it is the Talbot tower. The castle, abandoned in the seventeenth century, is finally classified as a historic monument in 1840. Victor Ruprich-Robert (disciple of Viollet-le-Duc) begins a restoration campaign that saves the dungeons from ruin. The dungeons were little affected by the allied bombardments during the battles of the Poche de Falaise. Architecture

It has a circular plan and is called the "Talbot tower". The castle is the subject of a classification as a historical monument by the list of 1840.
