Exercise Tiger was the name given to the preparations at Torcross for the D Day landings. The area was used by thousands of American troops to make their preparations, the local community had been evacuated from the area to allow exercise to be life fire. On the morning of 28th April 1944 a large group of land craft and escort boats were preparing for an exercise when they were attached by German Torpedo boats leading to loss of nearly a thousand soldiers.

This tank was sunk in 1944 and lay around a quarter of a mile off the beach until 1984 when it was recovered after a long campaign by local guest house owner Ken Small. Once recovered in was preserved and setup as a memorial to the men that died during the exercises.

The D.D. (Duplex Drive) Sherman is an adaption developed by the British in WW2 that allows it to be an amphibious vehicle. It involves the addition of floatation skirts and propellers connected to the main engine.
