This compass rose is located inside the entrance to the North Country Welcome Center, just off I-81 southbound/US 12 westbound in Alexandria Bay. The two-tone inlaid stone rose has enlarged Cardinal points with a large "N" next to the northern one.
The "circumference" of the rose is actually the geographic outline of the North Country, with boundaries at the Canadian border and the St Lawrence River to the north.
