The General Assembly is one of the six main organs of the United Nations as laid out in the UN Charter. It is the only one of the six that involves all member States of the UN which currently number 193. Regular sessions of the General Assembly are held every year beginning on the third Tuesday of September. The main sessions can last until the end of that year but follow-up or resumed sessions can last all the way till the following September. The sessions are presided over by a president who is elected by the member States for a one-year term.

The General Assembly Hall, which is the highlight of the guided tour, is in the General Assembly building, the one with the sloping roof and dome. This dome is directly over the General Assembly Hall and the interior of this dome can be seen on the stamp. There is seating for all 193 member States (3 primary delegates and 3 alternates). Translators (all proceedings are translated immediately into the six official languages of the UN), journalists, photographers and other technicians sit behind the windows that can be seen along the curved walls. Major renovation was completed in 2015 just prior to that year’s regular sessions. Although the basic design of the hall was unaltered, much needed modernization was incorporated in the areas of security and electronic infrastructure.

Over the years, many postage stamps issued by the United Nations Postal Administration have shown various views of the General Assembly Hall. The first of these was a stylized design issued in 1956. This particular stamp was issued in September of 1978 in conjunction with the twenty-third regular session of the General Assembly.
